Synopsis
Lords of the North is the first book in Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Tales series. It tells the story of Uhtred of Bebbanburg, a young Saxon warrior who is captured by the Danes and raised as one of their own. Uhtred must choose between his loyalty to his Saxon heritage and his love for the Danes.
The novel is set in the 9th century, during the time of the Viking invasions of England. Uhtred is the son of a Saxon earl, but he is captured by the Danes when he is just a child. He is raised by a Danish chieftain and becomes a skilled warrior. However, Uhtred never forgets his Saxon heritage, and he dreams of one day returning to Bebbanburg, his ancestral home.
When Uhtred is a young man, he is given the opportunity to return to Saxon England. He is offered a chance to fight for Alfred the Great, the Saxon king. Uhtred agrees, and he soon becomes one of Alfred's most trusted warriors. However, Uhtred's loyalty to Alfred is tested when he learns that the king has made a pact with the Danes. Uhtred must decide whether he will remain loyal to Alfred or fight for the freedom of his people.
