The Temperance Movement

The temperance movement was a social movement that sought to promote abstinence from alcohol. It began in the United States in the early 19th century, and by the late 19th century, it had become a powerful force in American politics. The temperance movement was motivated by a variety of factors, including religious beliefs, concerns about public health, and a desire to protect women and children from the harmful effects of alcohol.

In Southern Appalachia, the temperance movement was particularly strong. The region was home to a large number of Protestant churches, which played a major role in promoting abstinence. In addition, the region was plagued by poverty and violence, and many people believed that alcohol was a major contributing factor to these problems.

Prohibition

In 1919, the United States passed the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, which prohibited the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol. Prohibition was a disaster for Southern Appalachia. The region's economy was heavily dependent on the alcohol industry, and the ban on alcohol led to widespread unemployment and poverty. In addition, prohibition led to a rise in crime and violence. Bootlegging and moonshining became rampant, and the region became a haven for organized crime.

Repeal

Prohibition was finally repealed in 1933, but the legacy of the temperance movement continued to have a major impact on Southern Appalachia. The region remained dry for many years, and even today, there are a number of counties in the region that prohibit the sale of alcohol.

The Battle Over Alcohol In Southern Appalachia: New Directions In Southern is a valuable contribution to the literature on alcohol prohibition in the United States. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the issue, and it does a great job of weaving together personal stories, historical research, and social analysis to create a compelling narrative.
