The state has long been a central concept in international relations theory. However, traditional conceptions of the state have often been based on a narrow and androcentric view of power and authority. Feminist scholars have challenged these traditional conceptions, arguing that they fail to capture the complex ways in which gender shapes state formation and behavior.
This book brings together a collection of essays that explore feminist imaginings of the state in international relations. The essays in this volume challenge traditional conceptions of the state and offer transformative insights into the role of gender in shaping global politics.
The book is divided into four parts. The first part, "Conceptualizing the Feminist State," explores the different ways in which feminist scholars have conceptualized the state. The essays in this section provide a critical overview of existing feminist theories of the state and identify new directions for research.
The second part, "Gendering State Formation and Behavior," examines the role of gender in shaping state formation and behavior. The essays in this section explore how gender norms and institutions shape the way states are formed, governed, and interact with each other.
The third part, "Gender and Global Governance," examines the role of gender in global governance. The essays in this section explore how gender shapes the institutions and processes of global governance, and how these institutions and processes in turn shape gender relations.
The fourth part, "Feminist Futures," explores the possibilities for feminist futures. The essays in this section envision alternative ways of organizing political and economic life that are more just and equitable for all.
This book is an essential resource for scholars and students of international relations, gender studies, and feminist theory. It offers a comprehensive overview of feminist scholarship on the state and provides new insights into the role of gender in shaping global politics.
